Improvements, closures along William Field Memorial Hart Montague Trail State Park begin Monday
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced work on the William Field Memorial Hart Montague Trail State Park is scheduled to resume Monday, May 9. The improvement project to the 22.6-mile trail in west Michigan began last year and will be completed this summer. The improvements include widening, resurfacing and improving bridge structures.
The work that remains to be completed will be centered around the village of Rothbury and will require the closure of a few trail sections, including:
- A new bridge will be constructed over Carlton Creek, which is approximately one-quarter mile north of Winston Road, and will require closure of the trail for approximately six to eight weeks to complete. During this time the traffic on the trail will be detoured around the bridge work area via Winston Road, 88th Avenue and Meadow Drive. The work is scheduled to begin Monday, May 9.
- Two culverts will be replaced between the intersections of Cleveland and Arthur roads that will require closure of the trail for approximately one week. The closure will take place after the bridge work has started and will likely be closed late during the week of May 9 or on Monday, May 16. The trail will be reopened with a temporary gravel surface over the new culverts until paving can be completed near the end of June.
- Repaving of the trail at the culvert and bridge locations will require closure of the trail for one day to complete. This work will be done near the end of June.
Funding for improvements to the William Field Memorial Hart Montague Trail comes from the state of Michigan's General Fund, the Transportation Alternatives Program from the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Recreation Trails Program, the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, the Park Endowment Fund and local community contributions.
The William Field Memorial Hart Montague Trail State Park was developed in 1989 as one of the first “Rails to Trails” parks in the state. The trail winds through rural and wooded terrain and through the communities of Hart, Mears, Shelby, New Era, Rothbury and Montague. The trail’s success allowed Michigan to become a leader in trail development. Explore the state's extensive trails network at www.michigan.gov/dnrtrails.
