DNR’s Western Upper Peninsula Citizens’ Advisory Council to meet Jan. 21 in Baraga County

Updates on work of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Upper Peninsula Wildlife Habitat Workgroup, the preliminary results of the fall 2015 deer seasons, chronic wasting disease and proposals for Great Lakes net-pen aquaculture will be among the topics discussed when the DNR’s Western Upper Peninsula Citizens’ Advisory Council meets next week in Baraga.

The Western Upper Peninsula Citizens' Advisory Council posed in a group shot at a recent meeting in Crystal Falls.The advisory council meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. EST (5-7 p.m. CST) Thursday, Jan. 21, in the conference room at the Baraga Lakeside Inn, located at 900 U.S. 41 in Baraga.

Before the meeting, DNR division staff report to council members and the public, beginning at 5:30 p.m. EST (4:30 p.m. CST).

The public can participate in the session by offering comments to the discussion during two specified periods during the meeting. See instructions at the DNR’s webpage for the Citizens’ Advisory Councils.

Additional items on the agenda include:

  • Details on the DNR-U.S Forest Service “Good Neighbor Authority.”
  • 2016 Sportsmen’s Coalition meetings.
  • Committee reports on fisheries, wildlife, forestry, trails, recreation and law are scheduled. The forestry committee report includes a new resolution for the council’s consideration. 

The DNR’s eastern and western Upper Peninsula citizens’ advisory councils are designed to provide local input to advise the DNR on regional programs and policies, identify areas in which the department can be more effective and responsive and offer insight and guidance from members’ own experiences and constituencies.

The council members represent a wide variety of natural resource and recreation interests. Agenda items are set by the council members and council recommendations are forwarded to the DNR for consideration.
