DNR to replace Union Bay boating access site at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
 The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that the parking lot and ramp at the Union Bay boating access site at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park will be closed beginning Monday for a boating access replacement project, which is expected to extend into next spring.
“The ramp is being widened and deepened for improved access,” said Dave Merk, park supervisor. “Parking is being expanded and the approach grade and ramp angle are being redesigned.”
The project is expected to be completed by June 2016 at the latest. The boat launch is located off Ontonagon County Road 107 in the northeast corner of the 59,000-acre park.
During construction of the new boating access, the Big Iron boating access site – which is located 3 miles east in Silver City – can be used as an alternative boating access site for Lake Superior and Union Bay.
The project is being funded with DNR capital outlay money.
Union Bay is a popular destination, not only for boaters and anglers, but also for park visitors using the associated modern campground.
