DNR Outdoor Adventure Center to close Sept. 7-15 for scheduled maintenance and cleaning

The Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Adventure Center, located at 1801 Atwater St. in downtown Detroit, will close for scheduled maintenance and cleaning Monday, Sept. 7, through Tuesday, Sept. 15, and will reopen to the public Wednesday, Sept. 16. The center typically is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Visitor entrance at DNR's Outdoor Adventure Center“It’s important that we offer exemplary customer service to our many visitors,” said Linda Walter, Outdoor Adventure Center manager. “This closure will allow necessary time for deep cleaning and exhibit improvements.”

Detroit’s Outdoor Adventure Center, bringing “Up North, Downtown,” offers a host of outdoor experiences to the city’s urban center, allowing students, residents and visitors to learn through hands-on activities about Michigan’s outdoor recreation opportunities, conservation efforts and world-class natural resources. The center opened in late July.

It features a 40-foot-tall, fabricated, interactive tree; off-road vehicle, bicycle, kayak, canoe and fishing boat simulators; lifesize beaver lodge and eagle’s nest; indoor archery range; 3,000-gallon, freshwater aquarium; waterfall with a 36-foot drop, and much more to see and experience.

Admission to the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors (ages 62 and older), $3 for children ages 2-12 and free for children younger than 2. Annual family memberships also are available for $50.

A Recreation Passport is not needed to access Outdoor Adventure Center parking or to enter the building. However, the Recreation Passport, required for access to Michigan’s 102 state parks (including Belle Isle Park), can be purchased at the Metro Detroit Customer Service Center, located within the Outdoor Adventure Center, during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday). Get to the customer service center by entering through the side entrance along Orleans Street. Fishing and hunting licenses also can be purchased here.
