Big Shag Lake boating access site reopened
in Marquette County

Big Shag Lake boat launchThe Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that construction of the Big Shag Lake boating access site west of Gwinn has been completed and the new launch ramp now is open.

The access site – which is located in Forsyth Township, off Marquette County Road 557, along Knudsen Road – had been closed since Aug. 17, when work to replace the launch ramp began.

A DNR Parks and Recreation Division construction crew completed the $12,000 project.

“The new ramp will provide improved access for boaters to Big Shag Lake,” said Jeff Kakuk, unit supervisor at the DNR’s Escanaba field office.

The project is being funded through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund derived from boat registration fees and the Michigan marine fuel tax, which is used for the construction, operation and maintenance of public recreational boating facilities.

Big Shag Lake, home to various gamefish including walleye, bluegill, bass and northern pike, is a popular inland lake for boating.
