Eagle Harbor Boat House and Life-Saving Station Museum reopens
with new roof

The boat house at Eagle Harbor State Dock (Keweenaw County), which serves as a Life-Saving Station Museum, reopened earlier this month after construction of a new cedar shingle roof. Installation of the roof was funded by Recreation Passport funds that are reserved for cultural resource projects.

The boathouse was preserved by the Keweenaw County Historical Society, which operates the Life-Saving Station Museum. The new roof was installed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, including staining it red to be historically correct. The old roof had been in place for 77 years, since the boat house was constructed.

“We appreciate the work done by the Department of Natural Resources to fix the roof and make it historically accurate,” said Larry Molloy, president of the Keweenaw County Historical Society. “We were glad to see a sense of cooperation that developed between the DNR and the Keweenaw County Historical Society during this project.”

In addition to the roof repairs, DNR parks and recreation staff dredged boat wells and ramps to return them to the depth and condition of the working life-saving station.

The Life-Saving Station Museum is open to the public from mid-June to early October. Museum hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily and donations are gratefully accepted by the Keweenaw County Historical Society. For more information about the museum, please visit the Keweenaw County Historical Society’s website at keweenawhistory.org.

The Eagle Harbor Boat House is the only building remaining from the Eagle Harbor Life-Saving Station and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site of the Eagle Harbor State Dock was the original site of the Eagle Harbor Life-Saving Station when it opened in 1912 and became a U.S. Coast Guard Station in 1915 until it was decommissioned after World War II.
