Space still available for DNR’s August bear-hunting clinics – bear license not needed to attend
Trail cameras donated for door prizes; firearm raffled off if enough students register
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that there is still time to register for its upcoming bear-hunting clinics:
- Aug. 1 at the DNR Pocket Park
located inside the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds
2401 12th Ave. North, Escanaba - Aug. 8, 9 or 15 at the Carl T. Johnson Hunt and Fish Center
located inside Mitchell State Park (a Recreation Passport is required for entry)
6087 E. M-115, Cadillac
The classes will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will learn the ins and outs of bear hunting with experienced hunters and DNR educators. The class will cover habitat, gear, stand placement, baiting, rules and regulations, carcass care, and hide care. Participants will spend three to four hours in the classroom and then hit the trail to learn how to place a stand and bait in the woods.
The fee for the class is $25, which includes door prizes, a DNR bear patch and lunch. Registration is required. For more information and to register, visit www.michigan.gov/huntfishcenter or contact Edward Shaw at 231-779-1321 or shawe@michigan.gov.
The Michigan Bear Hunters Association has donated four trail cameras for door prizes. One camera will be raffled off at each class. If more than 115 students register for the clinics (currently there are more than 60 registered), the MBHA also will donate a firearm to be raffled off between the four scheduled classes.
