REMINDER: Graphic Packaging International LLC air permit open for comment
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Air Quality Division (AQD) is holding a public comment period on a proposed air permit requested by Graphic Packaging International, LLC (GPI) in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The comment period will remain open until January 14, 2026. GPI is proposing a modernization project that will decommission the K3 production line while also increasing production on the newer, more efficient K2 equipment. Boilers 8 and 9 will also be shut down as part of this consolidation effort. GPI’s proposal is an overall decrease in air pollutants being emitted.
Requests like this must have an air permit before the modification can begin. A permit limits the release of air pollutants and ensures the request will meet air quality standards, including health-based standards. The conditions in an air permit protect public health and the environment by limiting pollutants and establishing requirements for how a company must operate, monitor its activities, and maintain records. Air permits can include testing requirements to ensure all conditions are met.
A proposed air permit is written with these standards in mind; however, there are many instances when input from the public prompts valuable and important changes to a permit, if it is approved.
