Ford Motor Company - Blue Oval Battery Plant and DTE Marshall air permits open for comment
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Air Quality Division (AQD) is holding a public comment period for air permits requested by Ford Motor Company – Blue Oval Battery Plant and DTE Marshall, LLC in Marshall, Michigan. The comment period will remain open until July 28, 2025. The companies propose to install and operate a lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facility and a combined heat and power plant to support the battery plant's operations.
Requests like this must have an air permit before operation can begin. A permit limits the release of air pollutants and ensures the request will meet air quality standards, including health-based standards. The conditions in an air permit protect public health and the environment by limiting pollutants, establishing requirements for how a company must operate, monitor its activities, and maintain records. Air permits also include equipment testing to ensure all requirements are met.
A proposed air permit is written with these standards in mind, however, there are many instances when input from the public prompts valuable and important changes to a permit, if it is approved.
