Copperwood Resources air permit open for comment
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Air Quality Division (AQD) is holding a public comment period for an air permit requested by Copperwood Resources, Inc. (Copperwood). The comment period will remain open until November 13, 2024. Copperwood is requesting to install and operate a copper and silver mining and ore processing facility. The mine’s proposed location is in parts of Ironwood and Wakefield Townships in Gogebic County.
A request like this must have an air permit before mining can begin. A permit limits the release of air pollutants and ensures the request will meet air quality standards, including health-based standards. The conditions in an air permit protect public health and the environment by including limits on specific pollutants and requirements to operate, monitor, and keep records. An air permit would also include equipment testing to ensure all requirements are met.
A proposed air permit is written with these standards in mind, however, there are many instances when input from the public prompts valuable and important changes to a permit, if it is approved.
The public is encouraged to review information about the proposed air permit and attend the online informational session and public hearing. The proposed project summary will give a good overview of Copperwood’s request and what is in the proposed air permit.
