Submit Your Green School Application Today!
There are just a few weeks left to submit your application for 2024! Visit the Michigan Green Schools Hub to submit your application by midnight on March 3.

Earth Day Poster Contest – Grades K-5

EGLE invites students in kindergarten through 5th grade to enter the annual Michigan Earth Day Poster Contest! Prizes are awarded for 1st and 2nd place winners in each grade.
Students should include wildlife, plants, land, or freshwater ecosystems native to Michigan in their poster.

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act in 2024, we are also accepting posters that highlight the importance of safe drinking water and source water protection and will award one 1st and one 2nd place prize for this category.
Environmental Service Award – Grades 6-12

EGLE invites schools to nominate a student or classroom in grades 6-12 to be recognized for completing a school-sanctioned project that has tangible results for the environment. Two projects will receive an award, one for grades 6-8, and one for grades 9-12.
To qualify, the project must provide a benefit for Michigan flora, wildlife, air, water, land, or ecosystems. The project must take place between April 22, 2023 and February 1, 2024. A representative from the school must verify the validity of each project along with its outcome and must submit the nomination online.

New in 2024! Earth Day Student Summit – Grades 6-12

On April 25, 2024, EGLE will host the first annual Earth Day Student Summit in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), Grow the Earth, and MSU Science Festival. This student-focused sustainability conference will feature breakout sessions, hands-on exhibits, and immersive field experiences to explore careers in the environment. |
Funding Opportunities for Greener Schools
MAEOE Environmental Education Grants: Due March 15
The Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) offers Environmental Education (EE) Grants to formal and non-formal educators who are members of the organization. Grants of up to $1,000 are available for projects that help broaden the horizon of students, teachers and families to bring them closer to the natural world. Learn more and apply at MAEOE.com/Grants.
Grant Funding to Address Indoor Air Quality at Schools: Due March 19

EPA is seeking applications to assist K-12 schools in low-income, disadvantaged, and/or Tribal communities to develop and adopt comprehensive indoor air quality management plans. Projects should address air pollution and energy efficiency consistent with recommended best practices. EPA anticipates awarding four to six grants of $5,000,000 to $8,000,000 to support five years of activities. |

Great Lakes School Forest Webinar
School forests are a remarkable educational resource that is available to help meet state and core education standards, serve as a focus to integrate environmental education into the curriculum, strengthen school-community relations, and demonstrate sustainable natural resource management.
A Great Lakes School Forest Webinar will be hosted by Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Project Learning Tree on Tuesday, February 27th beginning at 4:00 pm. The following topics will be discussed:
- State Forest Programs in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota
- Engaging activities using Project Learning Tree
- Connect with other people from your state to share challenges and successes!
Start Your Journey to Environmental Educator Certification with March Workshops

The Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) facilitates the only Environmental Educator Certification (EEC) program in Michigan. The EEC allows new educators and career professionals the opportunity to invigorate and align their program objectives and set personal and professional goals to improve Michigan’s environmental education. |
The EEC is internationally recognized by and aligns with the requirements of the North American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE).
The certification process begins by attending the EEC Strand 1 Workshop, which will be offered virtually on March 7 and March 12 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Registration is $75. Learn more and sign up at MAEOE.com/Get-Certified.
