The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is holding a public meeting and hearing on September 22 on a draft air permit for a new natural gas power plant proposed by Grand Haven Board of Light & Power (Grand Haven BLP) in Grand Haven, Ottawa County.
The informational session details what the company is proposing and answer community questions. The hearing will follow to take formal comments related to the draft air permit.
The public is encouraged to review information about the proposed power plant and draft air permit. Comments may be given at any time before the end of the comment period on October 4.
The proposed project summary will give a good overview of Grand Haven BLP’s request, the contents of the draft permit, and what this may mean to local residents.

Natural gas power plants must have an air permit to limit the emissions of air pollutants and to ensure the company applying for a permit will meet air quality standards, including health-based standards. The conditions include things such as limiting air emissions and installing and operating equipment in ways to best protect public health and the environment. An air permit would also include testing of equipment to make sure all requirements are met.
A draft air permit is written with these standards in mind, however there are many instances when input from the public creates valuable and important changes to a permit, if and when it is approved.
If you have questions about the proposed air permit or the informational session and hearing, please contact Janelle Trowhill at TrowhillJ1@Michigan.gov or 517-582-5312.
