The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is taking public comments through August 16 on a draft air permit for a new asphalt plant proposed by Ajax Materials Corporation (Ajax) on the border of Flint and Genesee Township in Genesee County.
An informational session and public hearing will be held on August 3, 2021 to talk to local residents about what Ajax is proposing, answer questions from the community and record formal comments.
Asphalt plants must have an air permit to limit the emissions of air pollutants and to ensure a company, such as Ajax, will meet air quality standards. Air permits include things such as limiting air emissions and installing and operating equipment in ways to best protect public health and the environment. An air permit would also include testing of equipment to make sure all requirements are met.
A draft air permit is written with these standards in mind, however there are many instances when input from the public creates valuable and important changes to a permit, if and when it is approved.
The public is encouraged to review information about the proposed asphalt plant and draft air permit. Comments may be given at any time before the end of the comment period on August 16. The proposed project summary will give a good overview of Ajax’s request, the contents of the draft permit, and what this may mean to local residents.
There are several ways to provide comments:
EGLE, Air Quality Division, Permit Section, P.O. Box 30260,
Lansing, Michigan 48909- 7760.
