Attorney General and EGLE file lawsuit against Arbor Hills Landfill
On October 23, 2020, the Michigan Attorney General's Office and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) filed a lawsuit against Arbor Hills Landfill for violations of environmental regulations.
EGLE staff will continue to respond to citizen complaints and conduct inspections of the landfill. If violation notices are warranted, they will continue to be issued. "The filing of the lawsuit does not stop EGLE staff from being responsive to the community’s concerns," said Jenine Camilleri, EGLE's Air Quality Division Enforcement Supervisor.
EGLE has been investigating issues at Arbor Hills Landfill for several years, with community concerns escalating starting in 2016. EGLE's response to community complaints and subsequent inspections resulted in multiple violations of environmental regulations. These egregious violations led to EGLE escalating an enforcement action against Advanced Disposal Services Arbor Hills Landfill, Inc.
"The typical path to compliance was not being met with trying to move toward an administrative (or voluntary) settlement," stated Ms. Camilleri. "We are pleased with the actions the Attorney General’s Office has taken in filing this lawsuit."
Lawsuits like this can take time to reach a resolution. As information is received, it will be shared on EGLE's Arbor Hills Landfill webpage along with any additional inspection reports, testing reports and any potential violation notices.
Complaints or other concerns may be directed to EGLE by calling its Environmental Assistance Center at 800-662-9278 or by filling out the EGLE Online Complaint Form located at Michigan.gov/ArborHills.
