KMI no longer making chlorine tabs, facing EGLE enforcement
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Air Quality Division has escalated enforcement against Kassouni Manufacturing, Inc. (KMI). EGLE escalated its enforcement after several violations were identified when KMI failed to properly handle chemicals leading to fires at their facility in Belding, Mich.
KMI is no longer making chlorine tablets at their facility, which is the primary and most important resolution to the enforcement action. To make this and other restrictions legally enforceable, EGLE has drafted a proposed Consent Order, which:
- Addresses alleged air quality violations.
- Requires KMI to follow a compliance program.
- Requires KMI to pay a $115,000, due 30 days after the final Consent Order.
- Includes stipulated fines for future violations of the finalized Consent Order.
