Information session scheduled for August 5, public hearing September 2
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Air Quality Division is holding a virtual informational session and hearing on a proposed Consent Order for Marathon Petroleum Company, LP. As part of the Consent Order, Marathon will be required to retrofit an existing air handling system at the Mark Twain School for Scholars in Detroit and create a public online platform that will share real-time air quality data from around the refinery.
The virtual informational session will be held at 6 p.m. August 5.
The two Supplemental Environmental Projects are voluntary efforts by Marathon to benefit the community around the Detroit refinery with projects that have an impact on the environment or public health. The projects must go above and beyond what is required by law and benefit the community affected by the violations.
Marathon will retrofit the air handling system at the Mark Twain School, located at 12800 Visger Street, including air conditioning, enhanced air filtration and air purification using Photo Hydro Ionization. This project will improve the indoor air quality for students, teachers and other workers and community members who visit the school.
Marathon will also create a public online platform that will share real-time air quality data at the perimeter of the refinery. This platform will share carbon monoxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, total reduced sulfur and volatile organic compound data on the Detroit Refinery Community Website
The projects will cost Marathon $282,000 in addition to paying a $81,853 fine under the Consent Order.
“The two projects Marathon will do had community input and will provide direct benefits to students at the Mark Twain School and the community as a whole. This is the result of the community around Marathon continuing to advocate for projects to improve air quality and public health,” stated Air Quality Enforcement Supervisor Jenine Camilleri.
The Consent Order is the result of an enforcement action, which:
- Addresses alleged air quality violations.
- Requires Marathon to follow a compliance program.
- Requires Marathon to pay the $81,853 fine within 30 days of the Consent Order being finalized.
- Includes stipulated fines for future violations of the finalized Consent Order.
- Includes two Supplemental Environmental Projects costing $282,000.Work on the air handling system has already begun and the project is to be completed on or before August 31, 2021. The public online platform will be up and running by December 21, 2020.
