New Requirements for the 2020 MAERS Reporting Year
While your Michigan Air Emissions Reporting System (MAERS) report may still be on your mind, we want to make you aware of some new reporting requirements for the 2020 reporting year.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has implemented new requirements for industry when reporting control equipment and the emissions associated with it. The new requirements are for emissions you are already reporting, but the information indicating how the control equipment limits those emissions is not detailed enough.
Precise information will be especially important if processes have more than one control device in series or are associated with an activity, or more than one stack, where emissions are not evenly distributed between the stacks.
The challenge associated with these new requirements is that MAERS is not currently capable of collecting this level of detailed information.
Here is what you need to know:
- You do not need to do anything now!
- Not all facilities are directly affected. If your facility is identified as needing to submit this additional information, you will receive further information later this summer about what will be required.
- More details about the control devices, such as the order in which they appear in the process, which pollutants are controlled, and the percentage of emissions to each stack must be provided.
- Collection of this information coincides with normal MAERS reporting beginning in January 2021 and due March 15, 2021. However, the MAERS system is not capable of collecting this information. A mechanism is being created to gather this information. The collection method and instructions will be shared once it is finalized.
Look for more information on these new USEPA requirements in the coming months. If you have questions about these new requirements, please contact Catherine Asselin at AsselinC@Michigan.gov. Information on the Michigan Air Emissions Reporting System may be found at Michigan.gov/MAERS.
