EGLE launches first phase of Mega Data collection
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is launching a new data collection initiative, also known as the Mega Data Project. The primary objective is to provide the baseline data necessary for counties to develop future materials management plans and provide the state with a roadmap for materials management.
“EGLE has never embarked on a data collection initiative of this magnitude,” says Jeff Spencer, Manager, Sustainable Materials Management Unit. “Investing in data collection now is necessary to make informed decisions for the future and allow the state to propel forward related to waste and recycling.”
This initiative supports EGLE’s transition away from a focus beyond waste disposal to an increased emphasis on all materials managed such as recyclables and organics. This shift allows EGLE to continue minimizing the impacts of the material choices made every day and work to establish convenient, inclusive access to recycling, composting, and waste reduction opportunities; while also providing the foundation for our future materials management planning activities.
EGLE has contracted with Resource Recycling Systems (RRS), based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to assist with the Mega Data Project. The first phase of data collection has begun with the launch of online surveys for municipalities and counties that have materials management programs and/or events. The second phase of data collection will concentrate on service providers and materials management facilities, such as material recovery facilities and other private entities.
The Mega Data project will collect information for this first phase beginning now through September 2020 using a robust and accessible materials management program analysis and planning tool called the Municipal Measurement Program, developed by Emerge Technologies. EGLE has nicknamed this tool the eMMP. Once the first phase is complete, the data analysis will begin. The final outcomes and deliverables of this project are targeted for completion in Spring 2021.
