The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is extending the public comment period until May 29 for General Motors LLC Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly. Additional opportunities to participate in the process have been added and an online public hearing is scheduled for April 30.

GM is proposing to install and operate a new automotive assembly line to manufacture electric vehicles at the facility at 2500 East Grand Boulevard along the border of Hamtramck and Detroit. The purpose of the public comment period and public hearing are to allow all interested parties the opportunity to comment on proposed air permit No. 209-19, in accordance with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ recommendations designed to help slow the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The public is encouraged to review information about the proposed project and present comments on the proposed permit action at any time before the end of the comment period. Key documents are available in Arabic and Bengali. There are several ways to submit comments for this proposed permit.

  • Written comments should be sent to Annette Switzer, Permit Section Manager, EGLE, AQD, P.O. Box 30260, Lansing, Michigan, 48909-7760.
  • Comments may also be submitted from the public notice webpage (go to Michigan.gov/air, click “Permits”, then choose “Permits (PTI / NSR) Public Notice”: then choose “New Source Review (NSR) Permits Open for Comment”): Click on “Submit Comment” under the General Motors LLC Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, PTI Application No. 209-19 listing.
  • To leave a comment via voicemail, call 517-284-0900.

EGLE’s Air Quality Division will be holding an Informational Session on April 23 at 6 p.m. prior to the virtual public hearing to provide information about the proposed project to community members. To participate in the Informational Session:

All statements received during the public comment period will be considered by the decision maker prior to a final ruling being made on the proposed permit. Once all comments are considered, the decision-maker may approve the permit as written, approve it with changes, or deny the permit.
