EGLE Issues Violation Notice to
Owners and Operator of the Former McLouth Steel Property
for Asbestos Abatement Activities

On November 25, 2019, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Air Quality Division (AQD) issued a violation notice to 21st Century Salvage Next Generation Environmental, Inc., Crown Enterprises, Inc., and MSC Land Company, LLC., for activities at the former McLouth Steel facility.  The violation notice was issued in follow-up to an EGLE inspection performed on November 6, 2019.  During the inspection, EGLE staff observed visible emissions while an asbestos-containing oven was being demolished.  Under the federal air standards for asbestos no visible emissions are allowed when demolishing asbestos containing structures.  The parties have until December 16, 2019, to respond to the violation notice in writing.

EGLE is working with the companies involved to resolve the violations and to prevent them from happening again.  EGLE will continue to coordinate with federal, State, and local agencies to protect human health and the environment during the clean-up and abatement activities at the former McLouth Steel Property.

To learn more, please view and download the violation notice, see the AQD Asbestos Program Website, and see Michigan.gov/EGLEMcLouthNorth.
