MDEQ Awards Grants to 42 Community Water Systems

LANSING, Mich. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is providing more than $477,000 in grants to 42 communities across the state as part of the Source Water Protection Grant Program to safeguard public water supply systems.

The program provides matching funds to public water supply systems for the development and implementation of a source water protection program to help prevent drinking water sources from becoming contaminated. These funds can be used to develop a Surface Water Intake Protection Program for systems utilizing surface water or to develop a Wellhead Protection Program for those systems that use groundwater sources.

As part of the Source Water Protection Grant Program, communities relying on wells will define the area contributing drinking water to their wells, identify potential contaminants within that area and implement management strategies and educational activities to protect their water supply.

The next round of applications will be solicited from public water supply systems in May 2019.
