Clothing Donation Bin
You have likely noticed metal donation bins placed around gas stations, stores, malls, and other public areas.  While many great options exist for donating your clothing such as local reuse shops, charities, or recycling organizations (check out the Michigan Recycling Directory for locations near you) these bins can often provide an easy and convenient choice for donating your shoes and clothing while helping to keep valuable textiles out of landfills. Before you bring your donations to the bin, however, please follow these important guidelines:

  • Make sure clothes are clean. Contaminated clothes may end up being discarded.
  • No wet clothes. Wet clothing molds very quickly and can contaminate an entire load of clothing.
  • No dumping. Dumping items such as electronics, trash, and household items near bins is illegal and costs the donation companies money to manage.
  • Donate items in bags. Clothes may be donated loosely, but bagged items are much preferred.
  • Separate shoes from clothing. Shoes may be combined in the same bag as clothing, but is often more valuable when separated.

Many options exist to better manage your clothing when you are no longer in need of it. No matter which option you choose, remember donations can help provide clothing to those in need, help fund nonprofit work, and keep materials out of landfills. Happy donating!
