For Immediate Release: Denton Township Awarded Brownfield Grant to Redevelop Former Gas Station LANSING, MI. A blighted, vacant former gas station in Prudenville will be evaluated for potential environmental contamination with the help of a $42,700 brownfield grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The MDEQ Brownfield Grant will help Denton Township determine whether past uses resulted in environmental contamination, and estimate cleanup needs and costs. Once the environmental assessment is complete, the Township plans to purchase the property and demolish three vacant, blighted buildings. The Township plans to redevelop the property into a new park in the highly visible corner of M-18 and M-55. This new park compliments recent public improvements in the township including Trestle Park, Sullivan Beach and new pickle ball courts. The MDEQ partners with communities to protect public health and the environment and revitalize contaminated property. MDEQ grants and loans pay for environmental investigation and cleanup on brownfields. Brownfields are vacant or abandoned properties with known or suspected environmental contamination. Partnerships between MDEQ and communities have created $4 billion in private investment and 29,000 new jobs over the life of the Brownfield Redevelopment Program. Each grant and loan dollar invested by the MDEQ in 2017 to protect residents and the environment is expected to return an average of $32 to the state’s economy.
