The initial threshold screening level (ITSL) for all isomers of butyl acetate (n-butyl acetate [CAS No. 123-86-4], iso-butyl acetate [CAS No. 110-19-0], sec-butyl acetate [CAS No. 105-46-4], and tert-butyl acetate [CAS No. 540-88-5]) is 2,400 µg/m3 with an eight-hour averaging time.

The ethylene glycol (CAS No. 107-21-1) ITSL changed from 1,000 µg/m3 (one-hour averaging time) to 4,700 µg/m3 (one-hour averaging time).

The propylene glycol monomethyl ether (CAS No. 107-98-2) ITSL changed from 2,000 µg/m3 (annual averaging time) to 3,700 µg/m3 (one-hour averaging time).

The propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (CAS No. 108-65-6) ITSL changed from 3,000 µg/m3 (annual averaging time) to 5,400 µg/m3 (one-hour averaging time).

The tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether (CAS No. 25498-49-1) ITSL changed from 11 µg/m3 (annual averaging time) to 20 µg/m3 (annual averaging time).

The dipropylene glycol monobutyl ether (CAS No. 29911-28-2) ITSL changed from 11 µg/m3 (annual averaging time) to 800 µg/m3 (twenty-four hour averaging time).

There is an updated screening level for methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) (CAS No. 108-10-1). The previous initial risk screening level (IRSL) and secondary risk screening level (SRSL) were 1.3 and 13 µg/m3 respectively, were updated to an IRSL of 2 µg/m3 and SRSL of 20 µg/m3 (annual averaging time) based on an updated literature search.

The hexachlorobenzene (CAS No. 118-74-1) ITSL changed from 0.035 µg/m3 (twenty-four-hour averaging time) to 0.35 µg/m3 (twenty-four-hour averaging time).

The n-Methylpyrrolidone (CAS No. 872-50-4) ITSL changed from 700 µg/m3 (annual averaging time) to 5,600 µg/m3 (twenty-four-hour averaging time) based on an updated literature review.

The IRSL for propylene glycol tert-butyl ether (PGTBE) (CAS No. 57018-52-7) is 0.7 µg/m3 with an annual averaging time and the SRSL is 7 µg/m3 with an annual averaging time. The previous ITSL for PGTBE of 329 µg/m3 with an annual averaging time is being rescinded.

The ITSL for FC-247 (CAS No. 136797-56-3) was revoked because it was very dated an no longer considered appropriate.

To view the “Chemicals Under Review” list for November 2017, please visit the DEQ Air Quality Web page. Click on the ‘Permits’ tab, followed by the ‘Air Toxics Screening Levels’ tab located on the bottom left side of the page. The “Chemicals Under Review” list is the last item in this category.

Along with the new formal public review, we will continue our past practice of inviting and addressing questions or concerns about any screening levels, at any time. If you have any questions, please contact Doreen Lehner, Air Quality Division, at 517-284-6753.
