Recommendations Sought for Water Quality

Monitoring Locations

Learn how to submit during Oct. 10 webinar

As part of ongoing efforts to protect and improve surface water quality in the state, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is seeking public input on where to implement the watershed-specific component of the Michigan Water Quality Monitoring Strategy.

The Michigan Water Quality Monitoring Strategy seeks to:

  • Assess the current status and condition of waters of the state and determine whether water quality standards are being met.
  • Measure spatial and temporal water quality trends.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of water quality protection programs.
  • Identify new and emerging water quality problems.

For the next year, the MDEQ plans to target much of its monitoring resources to the watersheds highlighted in the Basin Year 5 watersheds maps (http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,4561,7-135-3313_3681_3686_3728-35720--,00.html), though the MDEQ will consider recommendations for other Michigan watersheds, including the Great Lakes and connecting channels.

The MDEQ welcomes recommendations for monitoring water or sediment chemistry, contaminants in fish, fish or macroinvertebrate communities, nuisance aquatic plant or algae growth, invasive species, E. coli bacteria, and other issues.

A webinar on this topic will be held on Oct. 10, 2017. Please visit http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,4561,7-135-3313_3681_3686_3728-12735--,00.html for details.

Recommendations can be made by submitting the Water Quality Monitoring Request form available at http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,4561,7-135-3313_3681_3686_3728-12735--,00.html. This form needs to be completed and submitted electronically by Oct. 31, 2017, to be considered for the current field season, which ends Sept. 30, 2018.
