Invasive species: Give ’em the brush-off

Does your work take you to several outdoor sites in one day? Do you fish or hunt at different locations in the same week? If so, your actions could be considered high-risk for spreading invasive species around the state.

How does it happen?                                                                               Invasive Species decontamination video
“Frequent travel or visiting high-traffic areas can increase the likelihood of coming in contact with invasive plants, animals and insects, and that contact can easily lead to their spread, if you’re not careful,” said Ryan Wheeler, a terrestrial invasive species biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The good news? Anyone involved in recreation, construction, farming, forestry or other outdoor pursuits can adopt some simple steps to safely remove invasive species from clothing, gear and vehicles.

Want to learn more? Take a few minutes to watch this new video that briefly explains the best ways to look for and remove invasive species.

Why does it matter?
Whether for work or play, the forests, fields, lakes, rivers and other outdoor spaces we visit have meaning. These places may be connected to our livelihoods or offer opportunities for leisure, or maybe we’d like to return there one day to share these special places with family and friends. Taking time now to practice good stewardship can help preserve Michigan’s world-class natural resources and environmental landscape for future generations.

What can you do?

Michigan's Invasive Species Program is cooperatively implemented by the Michigan departments of Agriculture & Rural Development, Environmental Quality, and Natural Resources. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/invasivespecies.
