Committee Chairs for the 102nd Legislative Session
Legislatures establish committees because of the number and diversity of issues which must be considered throughout each session. The committee system distributes the workload, relying on different legislators to develop expertise in specific areas.
Committees consider issues facing the state within their subject areas and evaluate legislation introduced on those subjects before the legislation is brought to the full house for consideration. When a bill is introduced in either the House of Representatives or the Senate, it is sent to one of the committees in its own chamber which deals with the bill’s subject matter. At the point of introduction, the bill will be given a number and will be made available on the Legislature’s website (http://www.legislature.mi.gov).
There are 20 standing House committees and 17 standing Senate committees. Each chambers’ Appropriations Committee (the committee where bills and other measures related to the state budget and allocating money to state departments are sent) - is also divided into subcommittees where bills with budgetary implications are assigned for discussion, analysis, and revision before being presented to the full committee for action.

Michigan Court News
ROUCH WORLD, LLC v DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL RIGHTS
Rouch World, LLC, and Uprooted Electrolysis, LLC, brought an action in the Court of Claims against the Department of Civil Rights and its director, seeking, among other relief, a declaratory judgment that the prohibition of sex discrimination in places of public accommodation under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA), did not bar discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Michigan Supreme Court Decided July 28, 2022, “Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation necessarily constitutes discrimination because of sex. Accordingly, the denial of “the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of a place of public accommodation or public service” on the basis of sexual orientation constitutes discrimination “because of . . . sex” and, therefore, constitutes a violation of the ELCRA under MCL 37.2302(a). We reverse the Court of Claims’ decision to the contrary and remand this case for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.
Hon. Elizabeth T. Clement, Hon. Bridget M. McCormack, Hon. Richard H. Bernstein, Hon. Megan K. Cavanagh, Hon. Elizabeth M. Welch.
