Michigan Adopts the New Third Edition of the National Core

The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD) is committed to ensuring that Michigan pesticide applicators have the knowledge and competency needed to apply pesticides safely and effectively. To support this effort, MDARD is implementing the revised third edition of the English-language National Core study manual and exam. This measure ensures Michigan’s applicators are meeting new federal certification standards.

The revised private and commercial core exams will begin on August 1, 2026. The third edition of the study manual is currently available through Michigan State University’s (MSU) study manual site.

Additional training materials are available through MSU Pesticide Safety Education Program. The revised Spanish-language National Core study manual will be available at a later date.

Contact MDARD with questions at MDARD-Pesticide@Michigan.gov or call 1-800-292-3939. Visit MDARD’s pesticide certification webpage for additional certification information.
