Industrial Hemp Preharvest Sampling Process
August 17, 2023
Industrial hemp growers are beginning to contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (MDARD) Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division for information about how to schedule with an inspector for mandatory sampling of their hemp crops prior to harvesting.
Please see the Industrial Hemp Preharvest Sampling Technical Bulletin for information on how to successfully complete the hemp preharvest sampling process. The bulletin is also available online at www.Michigan.gov/HempGrowing.
Note the following:
- Site visit and sampling fees remain the same as in 2021 and 2022.
- By July 15 or within 15 days of planting if after July 15, the grower is required by federal and state law to report outdoor acreage or indoor square footage of planted hemp, along with other reporting requirements, to the U.S. Farm Service Agency. Please find more information on MDARD’s technical bulletin, FSA Crop Acreage Reporting Requirements. Take note of special reporting requirements for growers that produce immature hemp plants to be sold as propagative material.
-
MDARD will typically not provide sampling services until the grower provides a copy of the FSA-578 Crop Acreage Report with correctly assigned FSA Lot numbers that distinguish between different hemp lots. A “lot” is a contiguous (connected) area in a field, greenhouse or indoor growing structure containing the same variety of hemp throughout.
If you have any questions, please contact MDARD’s call center at 800-292-3939 or email MDARD-IndustrialHemp@Michigan.gov to be put in touch with your district Plant Health Inspector.
