CDC Health Advisory on Delta-8 THC

September 15, 2021

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is sharing the following announcements regarding the public safety issues surrounding Delta-8 THC, a psychoactive cannabinoid most often generated from hemp-derived CBD.

As a reminder, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved hemp seed products – hulled hemp seed, hemp seed protein powder, and hemp seed oil – as Generally Recognized as Safe and allowable in food products.

The FDA has not approved cannabinoids such as delta-8 and CBD for use in food, drink, or dietary supplements, and Michigan’s Food Law adheres to FDA requirements.

More information on hemp products in food in Michigan can be found on MDARD’s industrial hemp website.
