USDA Announces Pilot Insurance Coverage for Hemp Growers

12.30.19

On December 23, 2019, the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Risk Management Agency (RMA) announced a new crop insurance option for hemp growers located in select counties of 21 states in 2020, including Michigan. The pilot insurance program will provide Actual Production History coverage under 508(h) Multi-Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI) for eligible producers in certain counties in Michigan. The MPCI coverage is for hemp grown for fiber, grain or CBD oil for the 2020 crop year. It is in addition to the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection coverage available to hemp growers announced by USDA earlier this year.

The specific counties that may be eligible is still being determined by USDA-Farm Services Agency (FSA). Full details and county listings should be available from USDA-FSA in mid-January 2020. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to pass along information as it is received.
