Canine influenza has continued to circulate in the U.S. Unfortunately, recently Michigan has seen an upward trend in case numbers.

Canine influenza is a reportable disease in Michigan, which means veterinarians and diagnostic labs must notify the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development if they suspect canine influenza or have a positive test. If you suspect a dog may have canine influenza, please report it to MDARD by using the form found at this link: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdard/RRAD_Final_2018.doc_626125_7.pdf or by phone at 800-292-3939. If a registered animal shelter suspects canine influenza, MDARD is prepared to assist them.

As of July 25, MDARD has had 18 confirmed cases of canine influenza reported for 2018. These cases were in four counties: Huron (one), Macomb (six), Oakland (eight), and Wayne (three).

As a reminder, requirements to import animals, including dogs, into the state of Michigan can be found at www.michigan.gov/animalimport. Learn more about canine influenza on the American Veterinary Medical Association’s canine influenza webpage.
