Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center | April 2023
Join us for the national celebration of Law Day next month! This year's theme—Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration—invites us to rebuild trust in our institutions, respect for one another, and our willingness to collaborate to address the challenges that face our nation.
Law Day lessons and resources, which include brief videos from real hearings, are available for your classroom along with the following events.
Peer-to-Peer Exchanges (May 1)
The Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center is pleased to team up with the National Constitution Center and the American Bar Association (ABA) to bring an exciting virtual opportunity to Michigan classrooms. The Constitution Center will host specials sessions of the popular Peer-to-Peer Exchanges, enabling Michigan students to discuss constitutional topics with their peers from across the country and legal experts from the ABA who will join sessions throughout the day.
Available topics include Constitutional Conversations and Civil Dialogue and Principles of the American Revolution—both chosen to connect with this year’s Law Day theme. View the schedule of sessions offered for middle and high school level classes.
Law Day Tours (May 2)
Limited afternoon openings remain for tours at the Hall of Justice in Lansing. Activities, designed to engage all levels, will highlight the importance of civility and include guest speakers.
Teens (rising 10th graders-2023 graduates) can learn more about legal careers by arguing a moot court case, similar to appellate arguments in the Supreme Court.
Participants will prepare a case in which the plaintiff claims she slipped and fell on snow-covered ice at the defendant’s gas station.
