The Student Enrollment Counts Report in MI School Data has been updated with data for school year 2024-25. Overall headcount was 1,427,386, a decrease of 0.18% from fall 2023. K-12 headcount also declined slightly to 1,366,207, fell by 0.54% compared to last year.
The report also lets users explore subgroups, which can help us start to see the deeper story behind the data. Use the Grades and Report Category dropdowns to examine headcount data for specific groups. For example, by selecting Economically Disadvantaged in the Report Category, you will note that the overall statewide economically disadvantaged counts in fall 2024 dropped by 7.5%. This was driven by a reduction in Medicaid eligibility, one factor used to determine students’ economically disadvantaged status. Medicaid automatic renewal provisions enacted under the Families First Coronavirus Relief Act of 2020 expired in June 2024.
You can also select a particular location. For example, you can look up the student headcount for your local district and see how enrollment has changed over time.
Switch from Snapshot to Trend view to see long-term changes and trends. The graph below shows total headcount, which has been trending slightly downward for the past ten years.
Starting in the 2025-26 school year, districts must provide students with an opportunity to share their primary tribal affiliation. Districts must then submit this data to the state as part of the regular Michigan Student Data System collections. Additional guidance, including a sample questionnaire and letter to parents, will be provided via memo by March 14. Please start reviewing current processes now to ensure readiness to implement these changes on schedule.
