MSDS News

Pre-identification for WIDA ACCESS for EL Students

The MDE Office of Educational Assessment and Accountability will pre-identify students for the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs Spring 2022 assessment in the OEAA Secure Site on Dec. 13.

OEAA will use records from the MSDS Fall 2021 General Collection and SRM records certified by 5 p.m. on Dec. 2 that contain K-12 students identified as active English learners. Students who are newly enrolled or identified as EL after this date must be pre-identified by districts directly in the OEAA Secure Site.

Collection Closeout Beginning Dec. 6

The MSDS will be offline beginning Monday, Dec. 6 to perform closeout of the MSDS Fall General and Early Childhood collections. We anticipate closeout will take approximately three days, and the application will reopen when processing of the collections is complete.

2021-22 Benchmark Assessment Survey Due Dec. 10

Per state law, districts must administer benchmark assessments to all students in K-8 in reading and mathematics. Districts must complete the 2021-22 Benchmark Assessments Reporting and Funding Application in GEMS/MARS by 5 p.m. EST on Dec. 10. This survey is used to report which assessments were provided for each grade and apply for funding for the MDE-approved assessments (Curriculum Associates i-Ready, NWEA MAP, or Renaissance Star)

Additional information on reporting requirements, including a Fact Sheet and FAQ, can be found on MDE’s Benchmark Assessments website.

Proposed Federal Data Collection Changes

The U.S. Department of Education has notified states of the release of the 3-Year Clearance Package, which itemizes proposed changes in data elements that districts report to the State of Michigan. These changes could require districts to update their systems to capture and submit their data files to the State of Michigan.

Districts are encouraged to take advantage of the public 60-day comment period, which ends on Jan. 14, 2022. District input can help ensure the changes are meaningful and positively impact education for students across the U.S. The department is also soliciting input on several specific issues related to the proposed changes.

If implemented, the changes would take effect for a three-year period beginning with school year 2022-23.
