The Elder Abuse Task Force Celebrates Elder Abuse Awareness Month in June

This month, we’re focused even more keenly on educating Michiganders on the issue of elder abuse in all its forms.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Month will culminate on June 15 with the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 5K Walk to the Capital.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Walk

The 3rd Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 5K Walk will take place June 15 at 11 a.m. The walk will start at the Grand Tower at 235 S. Grand Ave. in Lansing and will end at the Capitol.

The walk will be hosted by the Michigan Adult Services Division to raise awareness about elder abuse.

New Elder Abuse Task Force Training Videos Now Available

The Elder Abuse Task Force continues to work diligently to teach Michigan residents how to spot and stop elder abuse.

To that end, we have made available on our website recent training videos from the 2025 Michigan Elder Justice Conference. Each video from the conference is approximately 1 hour in length.

2026 Multidisciplinary Team Survey Report Released

The Elder Justice Initiative has released the report of its 2026 Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Needs Assessment Survey.

The report includes many useful bits of information about how MDTs operate and how they are used. One hundred-sixteen professionals from a broad range of disciplines, roles, and locales were surveyed in December 2025.

Capacity Assessments Webinar

In May of this year, Leslie Dubin, LMSW, ACSW and Kahli Zietlow, M.D. presented a webinar on how and why incapacity may be diagnosed in older adults. They explained what it means for legal practice and shared the four criteria doctors use for evaluating a patient’s ability to make decisions.

Legislative Package Update

Surrogate Consent (HBs 4418-4419)

The Surrogate Consent package would allow approved individuals to make medical decisions for patients who cannot make decisions on their own. After passing from the House of Representatives and the State Senate committee, the Surrogate Consent bill package awaits action by the full Senate.

Michigan Response to Abuse and Exploitation Bills (SBs 111-114)

Collectively, the four bills would improve the way we protect older adults and vulnerable individuals across the state. This package of significant legislation is currently awaiting action in the House Judiciary Committee.
