LANSING – Today, following Google’s announcement of its data center plans in Wayne County’s Van Buren Township, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued the following statement:
“Ahead of Google's announcement today, the company arranged a meeting with my office to provide some detail on their proposal.
“There is much yet to learn about how much of our resources Google expects to take here in Michigan to power and cool their massive data center operation, and my office will thoroughly scrutinize this proposal using every tool available to us to ensure DTE's existing customers, and energy consumers throughout the state, aren't left footing the bill for this project and the immense costs to deliver the expected electricity demand. Having obviously learned a lesson from the Oracle/Open AI boondoggle in Saline, Google made a direct commitment to me yesterday that they will pursue a contested case before the Public Service Commission over any utility contracts with DTE. I applaud that commitment and its recognition of the significant strife caused by DTE, developer Related Companies, and the MPSC by their rushed, back-room deals and fast-tracked approvals over their Saline Township contracts.
“While we continue our efforts to re-open the secret Saline contracts, we look forward to reviewing these DTE-Google contracts and advocating in this case for the people of Michigan.”
