MaineCare in Education: Updated Joint Individual Education Program (IEP) Guidance for School Health-Related Services

As a reminder, all providers who deliver services following the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) must ensure all MaineCare-covered services are documented following the Department of Health and Human Services/Maine Department of Education Joint IEP Guidance document.
The Maine Department of Education has released updated Joint IEP Guidance to help schools follow federal and state requirements. The updated guidance was developed through a collaborative effort and is available on the MaineCare in Education web page.
DOE first released the Joint Guidance on August 28, 2026, and has re-issued this guidance effective September 18, 2026. The reissued guidance replaces the previously issued Joint Guidance and provides clarification in response to questions and feedback received from School Administrative Units (SAUs), providers, and other interested parties.
All IEP documents must reflect the updated guidance as soon as possible, but no later than thirty (30) days of the issuance of the guidance.
Providers with current prior authorizations for School Health-Related Services through Acentra should upload any updated documentation to Atrezzo. Acentra will accept IEP language from both versions through October 18, 2026. Beginning October 19, 2026, Acentra will only accept IEP language from the new version re-issued on September 18, 2026.
