Announcing: Upcoming Updates to our Family Support Fund Protocol

Each year, funds are available to support families caring for family members with intellectual disabilities or autism. Family Support Funds provide flexible financial support for a wide variety of goods and services that may be needed to allow individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism to remain in a home with other family members.

Family Support Funds are administered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services as a funding source of last resort for eligible members with intellectual disabilities or autism and their families. FSF is authorized under Maine Revised Statutes, Title 34-B, including the provisions on family support services (§§1801–1802, §1806). Funds are limited and are not an entitlement.

The Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS) has completed a review and update of the protocol for applying for Family Support Funds. As part of this update, new resource guides will be introduced to make the application process clearer, more consistent, and more supportive of family involvement. Families are encouraged to work closely with case managers to identify unmet needs and determine where Family Support Funds may be able to help.

We look forward to sharing these updates in an upcoming training session, with the date and time to be announced in this new year.
