Potential COVID-19 Vaccine Changes (2025-2026)

No changes yet - for provider awareness only

covid

There have been recent discussions at the national level about possible updates to COVID-19 vaccine guidance for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. While nothing has been finalized, we wanted to keep you in the loop.

For now, current recommendations remain in place - everyone 6 months and older should receive the updated 2024-2025 vaccine. We encourage both VFC and adult providers to continue offering COVID-19 vaccination per current guidance. We will share updates if guidance changes.

ACIP meeting highlights

ACIP approved the following recommendations by majority vote and they have officially been adopted by CDC. They will be published in the MMWR and reflected in CDC’s print and digital resources in the coming months.

Chikungunya Vaccines

  • Virus-like particle vaccine is recommended for people 12+ traveling to areas with a chikungunya outbreak. It may also be considered for those traveling or moving to high-risk areas without an active outbreak, especially for extended stays (6+ months)
  • Live attenuated vaccine is recommended for people 18+ under the same travel conditions as above.
  • Lab workers with potential exposure are also recommended to receive the virus-like particle vaccine.

With pending confirmation of a new CDC Director, these recommendations were adopted by the HHS Secretary on May 13, 2025 and are now official recommendations of the CDC.

This was the only new immunization guidance officially approved and adopted by the CDC. Discussions on other vaccines, such as RSV and pneumococcal, are ongoing, but no new recommendations have been finalized.

The next ACIP meeting is scheduled for June 25-27, 2025 and will be held virtually.

CDC Updated Advisory on Chikungunya Vaccine

chikun

Do not use live-attenuated Chikungunya vaccine in people aged 60+

This month, the CDC and FDA recommended that health care providers STOP administration of IXCHIQ vaccine to people 60 years and older until reports of serious adverse events are further investigated.

Measles Outbreak Update

measles

As of May 15, 2025 over 1,000 confirmed measles cases have been reported across 31 US jurisdictions so far this year. There have been 14 documented outbreaks with 92% of cases linked to those outbreaks. For comparison, there were 16 outbreaks in all of 2024 and 69% of those cases were outbreak associated. While Maine has not reported any confirmed measles cases to date in 2025, national trends are a reminder of how quickly measles can spread especially in under immunized communities. It's important for providers here in Maine to stay vigilant and continue promoting routine MMR vaccination.
