Dear Licensee,

We hope the warmer weather treats you well as you gear up for another summer in Maine.

Outdoor dining is increasing across the State of Maine. We are reaching out with a friendly reminder about Maine’s prohibition on smoking and vaping in dining areas where food or drinks are prepared or consumed on or off site-premises.

To help ensure a healthy and welcoming environment for all guests and staff, Maine law prohibits smoking, including all vaping products, in outdoor eating/drinking areas of restaurants, bars, entertaining areas, hospitality, recreation and other public places. This includes patios, decks, sidewalk seating, and any other outdoor spaces where food or beverages are prepared or served.

What You Can Do:

  • Post clear signage in outdoor areas to inform patrons of the policy.
  • Implement a Workplace Smoking Policy.
  • Train all current and seasonal staff on Maine Dining Laws.

We’ve included a few helpful resources below to support your efforts:

  • To order and receive FREE Smoke-Free Area signage please visit: www.mainepreventionstore.com click “Collections” then “Tobacco”
  • FREE Maine’s Outdoor Dining Law Guide here
  • FREE Maine Workplace Smoking Act FAQ

Thank you for helping keep Maine’s restaurants healthy and enjoyable for everyone this summer.

Warmest Regards,

Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control
