NIIW25

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) highlights the importance of protecting infants and young children from vaccine-preventable diseases.

All staff in healthcare practices, including non-clinical staff, play important roles during NIIW. To highlight childhood immunizations this NIIW, learn tips for talking with parents about childhood vaccines.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend that children stay on track with their well-child appointments and routine vaccinations. On-time vaccination is critical to provide protection against potentially life-threatening diseases.

Prevent Measles - Measles cases continue to rise nationwide

Vaccination is the only way to prevent measles: one dose protects about 93% of recipients and a second dose increases the likelihood of protection to 97% or higher. Two doses of MMR are recommended for all children and for adults who lack evidence of immunity and are at increased risk of exposure (such as healthcare professionals and international travelers born in 1957 or more recently) to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella.

Children routinely receive their first dose of MMR at age 12–15 months and a second dose at 4–6 years, although the second dose may be administered as early as 4 weeks after the first dose. Infants who live in areas experiencing an outbreak or who travel internationally may receive a dose of MMR as early as age 6 months but will still need two doses after their first birthday for full protection. Families should follow state or local public health guidance concerning administration of early doses.

Maine CDC Offers Tips for Staying Safe While Traveling

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) is encouraging Maine residents to stay safe while traveling this spring. Travel and vacations can promote physical and mental well-being. That said, with school and other spring vacations occurring amid ongoing outbreaks of measles in the U.S., and mosquito-borne diseases like dengue in the Caribbean, and in Central and South America, travelers should plan ahead and take steps to stay healthy, whether traveling in the U.S. or abroad.
