Date: August 2, 2023

The Maine Immunization Program is proud to announce that Shila Hammond, Vaccine Coordinator and Medical Assistant has been selected as the Immunization Champion for Maine. The Immunization Champion Award, hosted by the Association of Immunization Managers (AIM) and funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), recognizes individuals who are doing an exemplary job or going above and beyond to promote or foster immunizations in their communities for children and adults.

Hammond was nominated and selected from a pool of health professionals, community advocates, and other immunization leaders for making a significant contribution to public health in Maine through her work in pediatric vaccination.

Hammond is a pediatric vaccine evaluator for Maine Medical Partners which entails educating and signing off on all the medical assistants, nurses, and LPNs for her organization. She is not only a trainer, but more importantly, a mentor to her colleagues.  She works with her Pediatric Providers in reviewing their quality matrix for vaccines and well child visits and reaches out to get the pediatric population scheduled for their vaccines. She takes time to educate staff and parents about all the different vaccines and vaccine options.  She excels at putting parents at ease when they are hesitant to vaccinate or new to vaccinating. Hammond is always there to lend a helping hand.  She is a true asset to her provider organization and to the patient population she serves.

When families, healthcare professionals, and public health officials work together, all people can be protected from serious and deadly vaccine-preventable diseases. Hammond is an inspiration to all of us who care about immunization in Maine.  We are pleased and honored to congratulate her on this well-deserved award.

Congratulation Shila!
