Subject: Monovalent mRNA Disposal and Reporting

Date: April 21, 2023

As of April 19, the U.S. CDC no longer recommends the use of monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Any pending orders of monovalent vaccine will be canceled. Providers must dispose of all monovalent mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine immediately. CDC now recommends the use of bivalent vaccine for all recommended mRNA COVID-19 vaccine dose(s).

Disposal and Reporting

To minimize the risk of administration error, providers should:

  • Remove all monovalent mRNA vaccine from storage units immediately, even if they are not expired.  This includes both EUA and BLA products (Comirnaty and Spikevax).
  • Once all inventory is fully accounted for, remove monovalent mRNA Covid-19 vaccine from the vaccine inventory in ImmPact.
  • Dispose of all monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine vials into medical waste.
  • Report all disposed inventory as wastage.

Resources

Updates to the COVID-19 vaccine clinical education materials remain a high priority for CDC and they are working to get materials updated as soon as possible. Updated educational materials will be available at U.S. COVID-19 Vaccine Product Information | CDC and at Interim Clinical Considerations.
