Subject: Vaccine Information Sheet (VIS) Update for Pneumococcal Vaccine (PCV15)

Date: February 16, 2023

On June 22, 2022, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended the use of PCV (either PCV13 or PCV15) for all children aged 2–59 months. PCV13 and PCV15 can be used interchangeably; either vaccine may be used.

With these new recommendations, the process to update a vaccine information statement (VIS) can take a long time and is subject to a number of requirements. The CDC is currently working at developing the next edition of the PCV VIS. It is unknown when this will take place, however, a notification will be sent out once a new VIS is made available.

The next PCV VIS update will include the newest guidance about PCV15 as an option for children. In the meantime, until an updated version becomes available, the existing PCV VIS should continue to be used. Providers can supplement it, as appropriate, either verbally or with the manufacturer’s package insert or other print materials (for example, to communicate that ACIP now recommends PCV15 or PCV13 for pediatric patients).
