Water Conservation Resources

As dry conditions continue in some parts of the state, the Maine CDC Drinking Water Program offers the following resources to assist public water systems in navigating drought-related issues:

Water Efficiency for Public Water Systems; this EPA document introduces water efficiency measures for PWSs and provides recommendations for improvement;

EPA’s Water Efficiency for Water Suppliers webpage; this webpage leads water suppliers through water efficiency strategies, water availability, and water maps of surface and groundwater resources to help systems evaluate source water viability;

EPA’s Water Conservation Plan Guidelines; this webpage provides PWSs with free access to PDF files relating to EPA’s 1998 Water Conservation Plan Guidelines. The guidelines may be used to help utilities create or improve water conservation plans;

Best Practices to Consider when Evaluating Water Conservation & Efficiency as an Alternate for Water Supply Expansion; this EPA document discusses six major practices for more efficient use of water and to help utilities assess how water resources are managed;

Water Audits and Water Loss Control for Public Water Systems; this EPA document explains water loss control and the importance of using water audits to identify and remedy water losses;

Water Reuse – Lessons from California; this article published by NEIWPCC looks at the West Coast’s common water quantity issues and the possibility of adopting their well-established conservation efforts in the Northeast;

Water Conservation Tips for Residents; EPA’s comprehensive list of conservation tips for residents leads consumers room by room with tips and tricks for conserving water.
