Maine Immunization Program Update May 2020

Maine Immunization Program Update

May 2020

Seal

thank you

We would like to thank all of our Maine Immunization Program providers for their efforts in offering safe and comfortable ways for parents to continue vaccinating and to seek medical care for their children during this time!

Some of the different ways providers are doing this is by offering:

  • "Curbside vaccinations" where a family can stay in the comfort of their vehicle
  • Scheduling well-child visits in the morning and "sick" visits in the afternoon
  • Options to separate patients spatially, such as by placing patients with sick visits in different areas of the clinic or another location from patients with well visits
  • Weekend hours
  • Virtual visits by telephone or video

If a practice can provide only limited well-child visits, providers are encouraged to prioritize newborn care and vaccination of infants and young children (through 24 months of age) when possible. We urge providers to continue vaccinating patients and offering these services during this time. The prevention of other vaccine preventable diseases is crucial to our healthcare infrastructure during COVID-19!

Meningococcal B Campaign

The Maine Immunization Program has kicked off an online Meningococcal B Campaign to increase Meningococcal B immunization rates across the State of Maine. The Meningococcal B vaccine is recommended to be given to adolescents and young adults between 16 and 23 years old (16 – 18 years only when using state supplied vaccine). Our goal is to have clinicians vaccinate before patients graduate from high school.

The Meningitis B Action Project has graciously co-branded materials with our logo for your use within your practice. We strongly encourage you to utilize these materials in educating your patients on a vaccine that they may not otherwise know existed. As healthcare professionals, it is our job to ensure that all children in Maine are offered the best protection against vaccine preventable diseases! To learn more about the powerful story behind the foundation of the Meningitis B Action Project, please visit their website.

To view and print the materials, please visit our Provider's Communication page.
