Opioid Use Disorder Screening Code Opened
To promote the screening and identification of individuals with opioids disorder, MaineCare is opening the code G9584, “Patient evaluated for risk of misuse of opiates by using a brief validated instrument (e.g., Opioid Risk Tool, SOAPP-R) or patient interviewed at least once during opioid therapy.” The reimbursement rate for this code will be set at $3.37.
Providers have a wide variety of screening tools to choose from, including but not limited to the tools below:
- 4P’s Plus is a tool for use during pregnancy, to measure risk of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use and it also screens for depression and domestic violence.
- CRAFFT is a tool designed for adolescents to screen for use of drugs and alcohol, including opioids.
- Rapid Opioid Dependence Screen (RODS) is a measure targeting adults at risk for opioid dependence.
- Opioid Risk Tool (ORT) is designed for patients who are being prescribed opioids and is used to assess risk of addition.
- Screener and Opioid Assessment for Patients with Pain-Revised (SOAPP-R) is a tool used to predict possible opioid misuse in chronic pain patients.

Upcoming Value-Based Purchasing Management System (VMS) Portal Transition
On July 2, 2018, the VMS portal is scheduled to be moved to the Health PAS Online portal. The VMS portal is used to manage the MaineCare Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) programs, including Health Homes, Behavioral Health Homes, Opioid Health Homes, and Accountable Communities.
Scheduled for Monday, July 2, 2018:
- The VMS portal will be through the Health PAS Online Portal, also known as the MIHMS Provider Portal.
- Login to the VMS portal will be through your secure Trading Partner Account (TPA) on the Health PAS Online Portal.
- Once logged in, the navigation will be familiar to current users as no changes will be made to functionality.
- Technical assistance for the VMS portal will be handled by the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) staff by phone at 1-866-690-5585, option 3 or through email.
In mid-June, we will send an update with additional details and direction.
