Governor LePage Orders Maine State Flags to be Lowered in Honor of Russell Libby

AUGUSTA – In remembrance and honor of Russell Libby, Governor Paul R. LePage has directed that the State of Maine flag may be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Saturday, December 15, 2012 within the limits of the town of Mount Vernon. The United States flag shall remain at full-staff.

Libby, 56, died Sunday, December 9, 2012 after a battle with cancer. Libby served as executive director of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) for 17 years, growing the organization into the largest state-level organic association in the nation.

“Russell Libby has been Maine’s small farm and organic farming champion. His vision has influenced virtually every aspect of our agricultural industry from farm to table,” said Governor LePage. “All of us who enjoy Maine’s bountiful harvests will remember his contributions and leadership.”

Prior to his service with MOFGA, Libby served as an official with the Maine Department of Agriculture. His dedication to Mount Vernon included service on the ordinance review board, the school board, and board of selectmen

Please note: If the Maine State and United States flags are flown on the same staff, it is appropriate to affix the Maine State flag with a black ribbon to denote mourning in lieu of lowering.
