Call to Fishermen!
Are you interested in Great White Sharks? The Department is looking for a captain to help deploy research equipment.
Contract Needs: Captains are not required to provide or store any gear, and vessel sternmen are welcome but not required. The contract would require one day in May 2024 and one day in Oct or Nov.
What the survey looks like: One or more DMR staff will meet the captain at their dock of choice and travel to each of 7-9 inshore sites, located as far south as Ogunquit Beach and as far north as Libbyshears. In May, DMR staff will bring rope and several 100# mushroom anchors to use as mooring for acoustic receivers, which are deployed at each site. Each deployment takes 1-5 min. In the fall, each receiver and it’s anchor are retrieved using a rope hauler. Payment for each trip is submitted the day after.
How this data is used: Information from this survey informs beach safety management. It also supports ongoing efforts to understand how large marine animals, specifically great white sharks, interact with their environment. The DMR white shark webpage will soon be updated to display 2023 results.
If interested or to learn more: contact Matt Davis with your proposed rate per day as soon as possible at matthew.m.davis@maine.gov, or at 207-592-2339 (call or text). We can provide a map of the tentative sites upon request.
